Game development is where my passions intersect

For a long time, I’ve struggled with a duel between my artistic and technical passions. It seemed they were doomed to never coexist, and I could only pursue one as a career path, and the other as just a hobby. When I discovered the world of game development, however, everything changed. Here was the perfect application of the two pursuits I held dearest and had spent the most time refining! I love the challenge of programming gameplay systems to be efficient and extensible. At the same time, game design, as well as implementing art and game audio, are extremely fulfilling creative endeavors. I find equal enjoyment in designing compelling gameplay and narratives as I do in implementing them.

I feel that my intersecting passions give me the ideal mindset and skills to approach technical design. I like to say that I’m a “design-focused programmer and an implementation-focused designer.” By maintaining a firm grasp on the overall vision of a game, I can implement gameplay that aligns with and contributes to the intended player experience. Likewise, by understanding how design elements would be implemented and the technical limitations and strengths of a team, I can push the design to its fullest potential while remaining in a feasible scope.

I am currently applying this philosophy to my role as a Gameplay Designer at Epic Games, designing weapons and other gameplay features for Fortnite.
